43 Chin Organizations Demand the Immediate Release of U Hawi Tin from Detention By AA On False Charges
It has been 9 days since the Arakan Army has abducted and held Chin Member of Parliament U Hawi Tin in detention incommunicado on false charges. With every passage of time, we are increasingly gravely concerned over the safety and physical well-being of the Chin politician.
We call on the AA to immediately release U Hawi Tin and to give him dignified and humane treatment consistent with international humanitarian and human rights standards while in their custody. At this time, we also ask AA to release verifiable evidence to reassure his family and the general public that U Hawi Tin is physically safe and secure.
The AA must realize that with every passage of time the continued illegal detention of U Hawi Tin is tarnishing its own image and credibility. We would also like to remind AA that any actions that deliberately target innocent civilians for violence is not only unacceptable and unjustifiable but could constitute a crime under international humanitarian law.
This could further increase unwanted misunderstanding and tensions between the Chin people and the AA, which could result in the public regarding AA’s action as an act of terrorism.
