29 steps to ensure women's safety
The Telegraph | Sumir Karmakar | Guwahati, Aug. 28:
Several organisations from the Northeast have pressed for erecting statues of Kanaklata Baruah and Rani Gaidinliu, two prominent women freedom fighters from the region, in the streets of Delhi among 29 measures to ensure safety of women from the region in the national capital.
Social activist Alana Golmei, Supreme Court lawyer Svetlana Khinjinzu and IPS officer Robin Hibu, all from the Northeast, submitted the 29 suggestions to a committee set up by Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal recently, following discussions with student and social organisations in the region.
Some of the other suggestions are introducing the Northeast's history and culture in school syllabi in Delhi, removing Hindi as a compulsory subject for jobs, having a member from the Northeast in the National Commission for Women, minority commission and in Delhi chief minister's public grievance cell.
