26 Rowland Road
K. Radhakumar *
Cars and cars and cars
Here, there and everywhere
Cars of all makes
Brand-new cars, very old cars,
A motorcyclist gliding
Through the narrow space amongst the cars,
Coloured taxis laden with luggage
Oh, Kolkata!
Oh, Kolkata!
Why?
A modern city!
Embracing its past
The city looks ahead
To a sun not yet born
The great golden bloom
On the eastern horizon.
Are you interested in
The latitude and longitude of the place?
Here rickshaws are pulled by hand.
One comes by me
Carrying a beautiful woman;
It leaves a whiff of perfume
As she passes
And I can well imagine
The scent of the machine of a man
With sweet pouring off him.
The scattered afternoon showers is just over
And it appears nobody is caught in it.
Noisy and full of activity is
The footpath of the narrow road.
A vegetable vendor is seen selling to a housewife.
At this time of the day
The washerman is ironing clothes
And he is listening to the radio
While he is doing his work.
Somebody’s had his hair cut
And the barber is giving him
A relaxing massage.
Pedestrians are hurrying home
Evening walkers are sipping tea lazily
From disposable cups, half the normal size.
Kolkata is teeming with life,
A wonderful city – a great poem
We always find something new.
