14th DGAR Sentinel Cup, State Equestrian Championship 2017
The 14th Director General Assam Rifles Sentinel Cup, State Equestrian Championship started at Imphal Polo Ground today. The event is being organised by 6 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South). More than 100 riders from 12 teams of different Clubs under Manipur Equestrian Association are participating in the Championship. The event is scheduled from 10-14 February 2017.
Major General Virendra Singh, VSM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) graced the Inaugural Ceremony as Chief Guest. He highlighted the dedication of Manipur Equestrian Association to encourage the sport of polo and preserve the rich heritage & sporting culture of Manipur. The Inspector General also re-affirmed the commitment of Assam Rifles to promote the sports & support the talented riders.
The opening ceremony was an amalgamation of rich martial traditions of Assam Rifles and Manipur Polo Association. The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by a March past of the participating teams led by the Pipe Band of Assam Rifles. The players took the traditional oath & swore to abide by the rules and regulations of the sport. Dr S Joy Kumar Singh, President Manipur Equestrian Association, Shri S Buddachandra Singh IAS (Retd), President Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association, Dr Th Chaa Mangilal, Secretory Organising Committee and Brigadier JS Bainsla, Commander 9 Sector Assam Rifles also attended the inaugural function as presidium members.
The five day championship will conclude with finals and Closing Ceremony on 14 February 2017. Equestrian events of Tent Pegging & Show Jumping both in individual & team category are scheduled during the competition.
