Emergency contraception - planning an unplanned pregnancy
* Dr. Bishwajeet Elangbam

Manipur the land where the Gods took to dancing is an ever enchanting place for any Khamba and Thoibi . A place where love and the fist and the fury always had an abode to remain together.

It has always been sort of an adventure whenever I take a journey from my home to Singjamei. Thanks to all the adrenaline rush provided by the so called both official and self-style securities. The adrenaline rush is enough for any heart patient to have a heart attack, or a genius to be classified as a schizoid.

However high the adrenaline rush, Manipuri Romeos would not have it enough, until they reach the pinnacle of being the knight in the shining Armour by eloping with their love ones. Many of us no matter whatever the situation is, enjoy getting married after eloping. There are so many who had eloped without knowledge of their parents, or even after getting engaged. We are people so much in love enjoy the sheer passion and excitement associated with "chenba".

It may sound funny, but on the other side quite a many unfortunate instances exist when people are compelled to Elope. I knew one such where a couple was check by our commandos and detained because the guy told the gal was his sister. The commandos sadistically tested the truth by detaining both of them by the side of the Nagamapal road long enough into the evening. The girl ends up moving into another home. Another one was about a couple who after a picnic, can't reach home before the sun sets in the west because of a flat tyre.

Still there are many other reasons behind eloping, but my emphasis is how many because of an unplanned pregnancy. I really can't imagine how many must have elope because of unwanted pregnancy, but am pretty sure it must be lots and lots. It is not uncommon to hear about many teenage marriages, which probably many are a consequence of unplanned pregnancy. And consequently another unplanned family, unplanned future, an unplanned baby in addition to the untold misery of young to be mother.

If this unplanned pregnancy could have been prevented, would it have meant a different life for another couple and importantly the life of an unplanned child? Many a confused lovers might have tried many alternatives including an illegal abortion by unsafe hands before they finally call it a day and end up eloping.

I sincerely feel emergency contraception can help and change lives.

If 100 women had unprotected intercourse once during the second or third week of their cycle, about 8 would become pregnant; but following treatment with emergency contraceptive pills, only 2 would become pregnant: a 75% reduction. That is a 75% reduction is the number of unwanted Luhong-ba.

Does it worth having a look then?

There are two forms of Emergency contraception, one pill and the other, the copper T coil. They are contraceptive methods to prevent pregnancy, following an unprotected sex (that is, sex during which you did not use a birth control or your birth control method have failed).

Some people call emergency contraceptive pills "morning after pills." But it necessarily doesn't mean having to wait until the morning after. The pill is taken right away or up to three days after a woman has had unprotected sex.

Therapy is more effective the earlier it is initiated. Any health care provider will tell you to take the pills as soon as possible after unprotected sex. If the pill is taken with 24 hours, it gives up to 97% protection against pregnancy, which comes down to 84 % by the 2nd day, and 75% on the third day.

Not all brands of birth control pills can be used for emergency contraception. Emergency contraceptive pills require a prescription. Do not use them except under the care of someone licensed to prescribe.

Most women can safely use emergency contraceptive pills, even if they cannot use birth control pills as their regular method of birth control.

But it has certain side effects, especially nausea and vomiting, which can be taken care by taking the pill with some anti sickness pills.

Another very effective post coital contraceptive method is the insertion of a wire loop called as copper-T. It can protect up to 99% if it is implanted within 5 days after the event. It means having to come into a clinic where a doctor or a trained health professional will insert the coil in the front passage of the women. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes and requires no analgesia or anesthesia and the lady can return home following the procedure. There is a very minimal chance of mild bleeding or dizziness during and following the procedure, but otherwise it is a very safe and easy procedure.

The efficacy is tested by the returning of the lady menstrual cycle, or if delayed a pregnancy test can be done at home with pregnancy test kit. Necessary commitments can then follow according to the result of the test.

Emergency contraceptive pills are not 'the abortion pills' and both of them are entirely different and should not be confused. They are true contraceptive in that they prevent pregnancy by inhibiting or delaying the release eggs from a women egg producing glands (ovaries). So we are not trying to kill any life forms.

For the many confused lovers, I honestly feel any doctor would be willing to advise if there is anybody who needs decisions on emergency contraception.

It will be definitely healthy for our young Romeos and Juliet to come out of their closet and cabins in the many restaurants at home and discuss their sexual health.

Most importantly, remember post contraceptive pills doesn't prevent HIV , hepatitis virus and any other sexually transmitted disease. There has never been anything else better then Sex after marriages otherwise don't leave the condomsbehind. Again reminding you, over 95% of women who takes the pill do not become pregnant.
