Dr. Shanta Laishram awarded "Microsoft Young Faculty Award 2010-2011" for Mathematics

Dr. Shanta Laishram, an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in Stat-Math Unit, Indian Statistic Institute has recently been awarded with the prestigious "Microsoft Young Faculty Award" 2010-2011 by Microsoft Research, India. At a very young age, he has had various achievements at the field of mathematics and academics.
Earlier he was an Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal from December 2009 to May 2010. He was also an Academic Visitors at ETH Zurich (May-June 2010) and at Max-Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, Germany during August-October, 2008.
A Post-Doctoral Fellow at Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Canada from August, 2007 to August 2009, he is also a Research Co-Guide of Manipur University. He has taught Under-graduates, Masters and PhD courses at different places and supervised few project students too.
He has refereed papers for few International journals and has till now published more than 10 papers in international refereed journals. His research interests are on Diophantine Equations, Irreducibility of Polynomials, Transcendental Number Theory and Diophantine Approximation, Prime Numbers and Cryptography, particularly, the number theoretic aspects of Cryptography. He has visited and given lectures at many places in India and abroad (France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, Canada and USA) on his work. He has also attended and given lectures at many national and international conferences.
Apart from receiving "Microsoft Young Faculty Award" 2010-2011 he has got TAA-Harish Chandra Award for Best PhD Thesis in Mathematics 2007-2008 at TIFR Mumbai. He was a Kanwal Rekhi Career Scholarship holder during his PhD Program at TIFR. In the years 1998, 1999 and 2000I he had been an MTTS (Mathematics Training & Talent Search) Scholar. Adding another feat to his fame, he was also a recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Science Talent Research Fellow-1999 of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India.
He did his schooling from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Thoubal District, Manipur. He graduated from DM College of Science, Imphal, Manipur in B.Sc. Mathematics Honours. In 2000, he joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai for PhD program. He got a Master by Research Degree from TIFR and later got Ph.D. Mathematics (Number Theory) in July, 2007 from School of Mathematics, TIFR, Mumbai, India.
As Dr. Shanta says, "I did my Master's by Research that is after my PhD coursework; I worked on my Master's Thesis and after the submission got my M.Sc Degree. Later on, I wrote my PhD thesis and got my PhD. So, I wrote two thesis, one for M.Sc and one for PhD". The title of his dissertation is "Refinements, Extensions and Generalizations of a Theorem of Sylvester on the prime factors of a product of consecutive integers" which was done under Professor T. N. Shorey.
Born at Khangabok (Thoubal District), Manipur on 1st February, 1980, he is the eldest son of Laishram Mahajon Singh and Laishram Sanahanbi Devi. He has five siblings and is now a happily married husband of Laishram (o) Kabita. He is a very jolly and down to earth person and likes travelling and watching movies.
He is also interested in environmental issues and on Loktak he says, "Not only that Loktak is the largest freshwater lake in North Eastern India, it is a source of livelihood for many people inhabiting around it. Also, it is the abode of Sangai, the endangered species. We should take special care to conserve the lake. After all, fresh water is very precious. You might have heard of lots of pats (lakes) which are not lakes anymore and we don't want Loktak in particular to be like that."
He likes teaching and mentoring students and his message to the youths of our society is that, "As long as we work hard sincerely, there is nothing we can't achieve. It may take time but we will get it. We should think reasonably and strive for excellence in what we do. Above all respect for others is important."
About the Award:
Microsoft Research Lab. India Pvt. (MSR) has provided some fund to spend for the promising young faculty members (below 35 years) as "Young Faculty Award", in the area of Computer Science and related fields, Electrical Engineering or Mathematics. The award amount can be used as additional pay, project funding, or as travel grant.
