Aribam Syam Retrospective & Masterclass concludes

Legendary and Celebrated Filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma on Monday stressed on the importance of engaging deeply with the state of filmmaking in Manipur. He said that all films should be deeply studied by the makers with the audience after screening of the same so as to discover their strength and weakness.

Aribam Syam Sharma was speaking at the closing of the 5-day Retrospective on his films and masterclass organised by Chingleipak Cine Club, Bishnupur and Chingkhurakpa Art, Chingkhu at the Community Centre, Bishnupur Municipal Council on 12th September today..

Delivering his speech, the ace filmmaker stated that since the people of Manipur have unique cultural expression, all efforts to imitate bigger Indian tradition will not bear expected fruit. Pointing out the differences between Manipuri performative tradition with that of the mainstream Indian one guided by Natya Shastra, Aribam Syam said those engaged in performing and visual arts should rediscover strength in “our own culture” with “our unique physiological feature”.

Commenting on how he has managed to showcase the intricacies of Manipuri culture worldwide through his works, Aribam Syam also emphasised on the need to nurture young talents in the art of filmmaking. He also made a fine distinction between what he called “movies” and “cinematic arts” arguing that “movies” had the tendencies to distance themselves from the finer aspects of filmmaking.

The Chief Guest of the closing function, RK Nimai, (Retired IAS) and advisor to the Chief Minister of Manipur lauded Aribam Syam for his extraordinary efforts to showcase the Manipuri way of life to the world. Narrating his experience with the world of films, he appreciated the organisers for holding the 5-day Retrospective and pointed out that the works of the Aribam Syam Sharma were worth such a deep reflection.

Natasha Elangbam, honoured delegate and faculty member of the Department of Mass Communication, Manipur University gave a general feedback of all the delegates, students and participants. She said that Aribam Syam Sharma’s films had the strength to portray Manipuri way of life in a truthful and subtle way without exaggeration or without being loud.

On the occasion, all those who attended the Retrospective and Masterclass were awarded certificates by the Chief Guest RK Nimai and Aribam Syam Sharma.

Earlier in the day, an open forum was held in which all the participants expressed their deep satisfaction with the event and their experience with the world of films. Those who led the deliberation in the open forum include national film awardees Oinam Doren and Meena Longjam as discussants and Natasha Elangbam and Dhiren Sadokpam as moderators.

It may be mentioned that the 5-day masterclasses dissected and analysed award winning and commendable works of the “Jewel of Manipuri Cinema” including Saphabee (1976), Imagi Ningthem (1981), Ishanou (1990), Sanabi (1995), Ashangba Nongjabi (2003), Leipaklei (2012)etc.
