ICAR initiated Transplanting of Tissue Cultured Shirui Lily in Shiroi Peak
An Awareness Campaign-cum-Plantation Programme of Shirui Lily - An Endangered Heritage Flower of Manipur was organized by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre under DST WOS-B programme in collaboration with KVK, Ukhrul and the Shirui Village Authority at Shirui, Ukhrul on 10.04.2015.
An attempt has been taken to aware the local people for conservation of the rare endangered Asiatic lily species through an exhibition, signature campaign and plantation programme of Shirui lily plantlets raised through tissue culture led by the ICAR Scientist Dr. M. R. Sahoo and DST women scientist M. Premi Devi.
Mr. M. Soren, General Manager NABARD has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition, signature campaign and also flag off the plantation programme. About 100 farmers, farm women and youth led by the village head man Mr. L. Willington have participated in the programme along with the invitees from KVK, NABARD, farmers club, youth club and other social organizations.
The photo exhibition-cum-live exhibits of in vitro regenerated plantlets, bulbs and bulblets, seeds, growing media, acclimatization and hardening medium of Shirui lily was dispalyed in the day long programme.
All the dignitaries and participants took part in the signature campaign of “Conservation of Rare Endangered Shirui Lily”. About 100 plantlets of Shirui lily out of the 500 plantlets raised through tissue culture techniques at ICAR have been planted in the Siroi hill peak at about 2750 meters above the mean sea level under the supervision of Dr. Sahoo and his team of ICAR in association with the Shirui youth club members.
The nebulous initiatives taken by ICAR Scientists for in vitro regeneration, in situ and ex-situ conservation of Shirui lily will be helpful to save this beautiful endangered species and also to prevent the perceived loss of lily biodiversity in the Shiroi hill range.
