Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) hosted the 16th edition of the"Workshop on High Energy Physics Phenomenology" (WHEPP XVI) in its own premises during December 1-10, 2019.

It was a great mood of scientific spirit among the 250 plus participants coming from different parts of India and abroad. The inaugural address was delivered by Prof T. G. Sitharam, the director of IITG.Prof A. Srinivasan, the Dean of the Faculty Affairs of IITG also graced the occasion.

On December 2, the inauguration Plenary talk was delivered by Prof Kajari Mazumder of TIFR, where she presented the main 'Highlights from LHC''. Prof Michel Spanowsky of Durham University presented a talk on ''Out of the Higgs era into the Dark".

On December 3, Prof Kate Scholberg of Duke University discussed the latest "Status of Neutrino Experiments." It was followed by a talk by Prof Sebastien Descotes-Genon of LPT Orsay, France on the topic entitled ''Flavour anomalies-theoretical explanations to explore".

In his talk on December 4, Prof Subodh Patil of Niel Bohr International Academy, Germany gave an overview on ''Primordial Black Holes''. Prof Subhendu Mahanty of PRL, Ahmadabad presented a talk on "Axion Like particles-Cosmological and Astrophysical Probes".

Prof Philip Urquijo of the University of Melbourne delivered a talk on December 5 on the topic entitled "Flavour measurements in the next Five years-Focussing on Belle 2". Prof Thomas Hambye of University of Brussels (ULB)illuminated the audience on "few trends of Neutrino Physics".

In Plenary talk, Prof Mauro Anselmino of INFN and Torino University discussed in details on "Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions and single spin asymmetries'' on December 6.

A detailed idea on '' Lattice QCD for RHIC and EIC" was provided by Prof Peter Petreczky of BROOKHAVEN National laboratory, USA on December 9.

One of the significant highlights of this year's workshop is the participation of a delegation from Japan, led by, Professor Y. Okada, Executive Director of KEK and Professor T. Saeki, both from High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, KEK as well as Professor K. Kawagoe from Kyushu University, Fukuokawith an objective of further fostering the Indo-Japan collaboration in scientific research in particle physics.

KEK is one of the world's major particle physics research organizations located in Japan, which has a long tradition of National and International Collaborations. The International Linear Collider (ILC) is the next generation of proposed major international particle physics programme withJapan being the leading collaborator and the host of this facility.

In the talk in ILC session on December 5 in Working Group 1 (WG 1),Prof Y.Okada, reviewed the ''latest status of International Linear Collider (ILC), the next energy-frontier electron-positron collider to explore Physics Laws at the Early Universe. It was followed by Professor K. Kawagoe's talk on "ILC Physics and Detectors". Further detailed analysis was provided by Professor T. Saeki on "ILC Accelerator".

There were in total five different working groups (WG), namely, 'Standard Model and Beyond the Standard Model physics', 'Flavour Physics', 'Neutrino Physics', 'Heavy Ion Physics and QCD', 'Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology'.

The activities of this workshop covered almost entire area of particle physics. There were plenty of discussions and talks in each of the five different Working Groups, which led to the emergence of some very interesting problems of current interest. These ideas were framed into few projects and interested people who expressed their desire to work on them formed small groups to bring out some appealing output.

The workshop provided the participants the common platform to interact, exchange state-of-the-art research and development and also initiate new collaborative research ideas on emerging issues in particle physics.

Professor Rohini Godbole of the Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore, the winner of the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2019, delivereda colloquium in the Bhupen Hazarika auditorium of IITG on 7th December from 4 pm onwards which was open to the general public.

Prof Godbole delivered the talk on the topic ''Whither Particle Physics and Colliders? ''. Prof. Godbole was offered the honorary life-membership of Physics Academy of Northeast (PANE), which she gracefully accepted.

Prof Godbole also delivered a talk in WG 1 on the topic "ILC and Indian Physics Community" on December 5. She said that it is time to endorse International Linear Collider (ILC). She also opined that India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) with rich physics potential during its first phase of operation with atmospheric neutrinos will come out to be the major domestic HEP Physics activity in coming years.

The General Body Meeting (GBM) took place in the evening of December 6. The contenders for WHEPP 2021 are IIT, Gandhinagar, IISER (PUNE) and TIFR (Mumbai). Details of proposals from them are awaited for confirmation of the final venue.

On Dec 10, the conveners of the five different Working Groups summarised their Working Group Activities for the whole session and highlighted the interesting ideas generated during the Workshop.

The Workshop, which has been a renzendevous of physics loving people from all around the world, thus brought a sense of togetherness in physics community which helped immensely to generate new ideas and motivate to solve them in future.

Says Prof. Bipul Bhuyan of IITG, the Convenor of WHEPP, ''it was a wonderful experience to organize WHEPP for the first time in the Northeastern region of India where we observed the highest number of participants in any WHEPP organized so far elsewhere. I was great to see so many interesting ideas which were discussed during the workshop."
