1. About Sikkim University

Sikkim University was established under the Sikkim University Act 2006 (10 of 2007) on July 2, 2007. Its jurisdiction extends to the whole of Sikkim. The University is at present located in and around Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which borders on Bhutan, China and Nepal on its east, north and west respectively. Sikkim is also one of the world’s richest and least exploited bio-diversity hot spots. As an affiliating university, it is designed in such a way as to make it known for its academic excellence and innovative research. The University is mandated to contribute significantly to the nation-building process by mobilizing the rich intellectual heritage of the state of Sikkim, by promoting the creative instincts of its youths and by developing itself as a premier national institution.

The University is currently functioning from several hired buildings along the National Highway No. 31A. Sikkim has been adjudged by Lonely Planet as the world’s number one destination for tourists. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, off Siliguri city of West Bengal. The distance between Bagdogra and Gangtok is about 124 kms. Taxis to Gangtok are available on hire at the airport. A helicopter service is also operated regularly between Bagdogra and Gangtok by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Station, which is about 125 kms from Gangtok. All trains to and from Northeast India stop at this major junction. Gangtok is well-connected by road with Siliguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong by the National Highway 31A. There are regular services of Sikkim Nationalised Transport buses between Gangtok and Siliguri. Private buses and light vehicles are also available on hire from Siliguri and Bagdogra for coming to Sikkim.

Sikkim University is in the process of building a world-class campus on a plot of land measuring approximately 300 acres at Yangang in the South District of Sikkim and 56 kilometres from Gangtok. The Government of Sikkim has handed over major portion of land for the purpose and the Hon’ble President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity as the Visitor of the university has laid the foundation stone of the campus on April 16, 2013 in the august presence of the Governor and the Chief Minister of Sikkim. The site of the campus is connected with Singtam town by a state highway. On the northern fringe of the campus is a model tourist village with traditional houses, ultra- modern conferencing facilities, children’s park, etc. On its western front lies the upcoming skywalk at a height of about 11,000 feet a top Bhaledhunga rock and overlooking the upcoming University campus. Bhaledhunga is also a prime destination of adventure tourists and is accessible from the campus through a trek route. A leading architectural firm is being engaged to design the buildings and prepare the master plan of the campus. The campus will be one hundred percent residential, as commuting from Gangtok or any other nearby town will be difficult. The campus will have an administrative cum academic complex, residential complex, Kendriya Vidyalaya, students’ hostels and sporting complex, market complex with restaurants, departmental stores and other utility stores. The buildings will be centrally heated with solar power and/or organic gas. The buildings will be disabled-friendly and having GRIHA compliance. The major buildings will be connected with wide footpaths with overhead roofs. The campus will also have an animal house, a horticultural garden, a botanical garden and so on. There will be plenty of pedestrian area where the campus dwellers can walk around without the fear of being hit by running vehicles. Water harvesting and sewage treatment plants will also be integrated into the campus plan. The project is estimated to cost over eight hundred crores and will be commissioned in the course of next two years.

Simultaneously with the planning of a world-class infrastructure, the University has been focussing on teaching and research activities in a big way. The revision of the entire undergraduate and postgraduate syllabi is completed and the University now has one of the most up-to-date syllabi for implementation from August 2014. The University is facilitating its young faculty members to go for Refresher and Orientation courses in other universities and participating in various seminars in India and abroad. The University also invites a large number of specialists from various parts of India to teach and train the students in special areas of knowledge besides sending the students for internships to various industries in the country.
