Imphal, May 10 2010: The communist Party of India (Marxist), Manipur State Committee has requested the State Election Commission to postpone the elections to the six Autonomous District Councils in Manipur until the prevailing situation in the state improves.

Sarat Salam, Secretary, CPI(M) MSC, in a letter to the State Election Commission said that the State Secretariat of the party held a meeting yesterday and discussed the ensuing elections to the six ADCs in five hill districts of Manipur to be held on May 26 and June 2 respectively.

After thorough discussion, the meeting demanded that the elections to the six ADCs be deferred till the law and order situation in the state, particularly in the hill districts improves.

The party feels that the present situation in Manipur is not suitable for holding a free and fair election, Sarat Salam said in the letter.

The decision of the party State Secretariat is in the interest of the electorate and general public of Manipur as the state has been in turmoil for the last 10 days or so on the issue of Th Muivah's proposed visit to Manipur, the letter added.
