Human trafficking: Accused agent in police net

Imphal, September 25: Police have arrested a person in connection with the alleged incident of selling off five girls including four from Tamenglong district of Manipur at a night club of Malaysia after being taken on promise of offering jobs.

The accused person identified as Phillip Gonmei of Sibilong was reportedly arrested by a team of Tamenglong Police from Imphal on the night of September 23 .

According to police, one Vicky Kungo, a Tibetan refugee who stays in Arunachal Pradesh is also involved in the case.

Police said that along with registering cases under various sections of IPC related to human trafficking against Phillip, further investigations are on.

The latest incident of human trafficking came to light after one of the five girls and Reverend David of Tamil Nadu who has been providing shelter to them in a destitute home run by him at Singapore after they managed to flee from the night club contacted human rights activist Kinderson Pamei.

Out of the five girls, four of them are Tamenglong district of Manipur and the other from Assam but belonging to Zeliangrong community, have been reportedly taken to Singapore on promise of job offer by an agent in early part of 2008 .

Besides, the five girls, the police suspected that some other girls may have been taken along with them.

Among the four girls from Tamenglong, two are reportedly from Tamenglong Ward No.4, one from Gaidimjang village under Khoupum sub-division and the other from , Khunjaron village.

All of them are said to be around 25 years of age.
