Imphal, August 24 2009: A suspected underground activist was reportedly shot dead by the Army during an encounter at a place called Moirangkhongpat, located in between Toubul Mamang and Ngaikhong in Bishnupur district.

According to police report, an encounter between the personnel of 4/8 Gorkha Rifles and suspected armed UGs took place at around 4 am today and the exchange of firing lasted for around 5 minutes.

During the encounter, one UG suspect was killed and one AK-56 Rifle and a magazine loaded with nine rounds of ammunition have been recovered from the slain UG suspect.

Meanwhile, unidentified armed persons allegedly opened fire at a passenger bus and a car near Phoubakchao Ikhai along Imphal-Churachandpur Road, last night .

Police report said that passenger bus (MN-01/0731) and Maruti Wagon R car (MN-1A/8404) came under firing of unidentified armed persons at around 6.16 pm.

Apart from smashing the windscreen, the left side front tyre of the car got punctured when hit by bullet while the left side rear tyre and front tyre of the bus were punctured.

However, no one as injured in the attack.

On the other hand, a Chinese made hand grenade was recovered from near Babu Hotel at Khurai Sajor Leikai along Imphal-Ukhrul Road at around 9 am today.

Bomb experts of the State Police Department retrieved the grenade whose pin had already been pulled out and afterward detonated it safely.
