UG suspect shot dead, UGs held

Imphal, July 16: A combined force of Imphal West Police Commandos and personnel of 12 Maratha Light Infantry shot dead a suspected underground activist during a shoot out which took place at Hiyangthang Tarahei Khul, near Mahadeva temple under Wangoi Police Station at around 9.15 pm today.

Police said the deceased is suspected to be a KCP activist.

In connection with the incident, police said that the combined team was patrolling the area when two suspected armed UGs fired upon them.

The combined force also retaliated the firing lading to the dead of one UG suspect while the other managed to escape.

Police claimed that the combined force have recovered one 9 mm pistol, three live rounds of ammunition and one magazine from the possession of the slain UG suspect.

In unrelated incident, a patrol party of 165 Battalion of Territorial Army recovered a body lying along the road side of NH-39, around 1 km south of Sapermeina Police Station at around 1.30 am today.

Firing attack: Unidentified gunmen opened fire 3/4 rounds at the residence of AE of LDA Langpoklakpam Gunmani of Nongmeibung Pung Makhong under Porompat Police Station at around 7.40 pm today.

No one was injured in the attack.

UGs held: Police commandos and Assam Rifles troops have apprehended four KCP and a KYKL cadre from different locations of Thoubal and Imphal East districts in the past 24 hours.

At about 6.30 am today, Thoubal police commandos hauled up a KCP (MC) cadre identified as Nongmaithem Basanta Singh (35) s/o (L) N Tomba Singh of Lamding Khumanthem Leikai from the same place where a search operation was conducted following information of presence of KCP cadres, said a statement of the district's SP Clay Khongsai.

Identifying the captive duo as Thokchom Jimmy Singh alias Jumbi (23) s/o Th Momon Singh of Moirangkhom Sougaijam Leirak and Kangabam Biramani Singh alias Biren (30) s/o K Robichandra Singh of Bamon Leikai Nahabam, SP (IE) in a statement issued received today informed that both joined the armed group in March 2008 through one Boy.

Jimmy and Biramani were involved in the extortion of Rs 2000 from a New Lambulane shop owned by a non-Manipuri.

According to a release of the PRO IGAR(S), troops of 21 AR launched search operation at Pallel area yesterday and arrested a KCP (MC) cadre identified as K Dineshwar alias Ango Meitei (21) s/o K Tomcha Meitei of Nambol Bazar.

During another operation conducted at Khurai area by troops of 39 Assam Rifles this morning one KYKL activist identified as Salam Basanta Singh (43) s/o (L) S Mani Singh of naoremthong Laishram Leikai was nabbed.

Both Dineshwar and Basanta have been handed over to police stationed concerned today, the PRO added.
