Imphal, March 30 2009: LDC in Electrical and Mechanical Division of Irrigation and Flood Control Department Wahengbam Bilashini (43) was shot and injured by some unidentified persons at her Khurai Konsam Leikai Tharoijam Leirak residence at about 8.30 pm yesterday.

Of the two youths who came to the residence of Bilashini, one of them extended his hand through the window and shot a round which grazed at the right armpit of the lady LDC, informed a police source.

Bilashini was brought home after giving first aid at a nearby hospital as the injury was a minor one.

With the recovery of a fired case from the spot, Porompat Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and investigation initiated.

Speaking to media persons today, Bilashini said that she was with her youngest son when dogs started barking persistently.

As she went outside to check if anything was wrong, Bilashini saw a youth standing in the courtyard.

At the moment, another youth shouted from the residential gate saying that "it is us".

Disclosing that they were carrying guns, the youths asked Bilashini to see them off till Salanthong as there were commandos as Chaithabi Leirak.

As Bilashini refused to help them, they said they would keep back their guns with Bilashini while also asking her to come out till the residential gate.

Bilashini again refused to keep the guns with her.

At this, one of the youth opened a window from outside in the southern side of the house and fired a shot.

"At this point, my son had already fled and was hiding in the neighbouring house", Bilashini conveyed.

Taking strong exception to the act of shooting and injuring a woman, local Meira Paibis staged a protest demonstration in the locality.

Bilashini is working as an LDC in place of her late husband after being appointed under Die-in-Harness scheme.

The Meira Paibis have also appealed to the perpetrators to own the act and come up with an explicit explanation at the earliest.
