Imphal, October 25 2009: A joint meeting of executive members of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors of daily newspapers held today at Manipur Press Club has resolved to surrender identity cards issued to mediapersons by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), govt of Manipur.

Decision to formally hand-over the identity cards was adopted in protest against continued inaction of the State Government to AMWJU's demand for appropriate action against personnel of manipur police commandos involved in the physical assault and threatening of two journalists at gun-point on October 10 night.

Informing that the identity cards would be surrendered to the DIPR Director or relevant authority on October 27, an AMWJU statement pointed out that State scribes are feeling insecure as a consequence of the October 10 incident, wherein the two journalists were assaulted even after producing their respective identity cards.

The statement also asserted that in case decision to surrender the identity cards fail to evoke positive response from the Government to demand for appropriate action against the rogue police commandos, the next course of agitation by the scribes would be handing over the Manipur Press Club to the State Government.
