JAC on killing in Phayeng suspends stir

Imphal, November 20: Responding to the appeal of Forest and Environment Minister Thoudam Debendra, who is also the Chief Minister in-charge, to give 12 hours time to consider its demands, the JAC formed in connection with the killing of Asem Brajamani of Phayeng has called of its agitation for some hours.

The JAC was formed during a public meeting attended by representatives of Apunba Lup at Phayeng today held in connection with killing of Brajamani by Imphal West Commandos on the night of November 18 near Khoyathong Pukhri Achouba Mapan.

After the meeting, a large number of people led by members of the JAC descended in front of the CM's bungalow at around 5.40 pm to lodge their protest against the killing.

Although police personnel on duty dispersed them from the spot, some of the JAC members were allowed to meet the Chief Minister in-charge to discuss the matter.

During the meeting, a memorandum highlighting the demands of the JAC was submitted to the Chief Minister in-charge who in turn appealed to the JAC members to give 12 hours time to consider the demands.

The demands of the JAC include withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, punishment of the guilty police commando personnel and instituting a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, a spokesperson of the JAC said that in case there is no positive response from the side of the Government within the said time frame, the JAC would resort to various intense agitation and the body would not be taken until the matter is resolved.

The body of Brajamani is still lying at RIMS morgue.
