Imphal, February 19: A suspected underground activist was reportedly shot dead by Imphal West District Police Commandos during an encounter at Kwakeithel Moirangpurel under Singjamei Police Station at around 7 pm today.

The body has been picked up and kept at the mortuary of RIMS at Lamphel for identification and needed procedures.

According to police report, late in the evening today, a Commando team was patrolling in Kwakeithel area when two persons came riding on a Yamaha.

The Commandos asked them to stop but instead of stopping the pillion rider fired at the Commandos.

In the retaliatory firing, the Commandos killed the pillion rider while his companion managed to escape towards Kwakeithel Moirang Purel side.

One 9 mm pistol, one detonator and live round of ammunition have been recovered from the possession of the slain person, the police source added.
