One UG suspect slain

Imphal, November 12 2009: One suspected UG cadre has been slain in a reported encounter with a combined security team on Thoubal-Leishangthem road last night.

Acting on specific information about the movement of UG cadres from Thoubal Moijing towards Ningombam, Thoubal police commandos and troops of 34 AR opened multiple mobile check-posts along Thoubal-Leishangthem road and conducted frisking of commuters.

The encounter ensued in the course of the frisking exercise, said a press release issued Thoubal SSP Clay Khongsai.

At about 8.35 pm, a combined security team conducting frisking near Moijing village saw two youngsters coming in a suspicious manner.

As the security personnel challenged them for identification, the youngsters turned back and fled away.

The security personnel pursued them but shortly after the two youngsters hopped to the sides of the road and opened fire towards the security personnel using automatic weapons.

This resulted in a gun-fight that lasted for about five minutes.

While one suspected UG cadre was slain in the encounter, the other managed to escape under cover of the darkness.

Later, on searching the spot, one 9 mm pistol, one magazine, three live rounds, 11 cartridges of AK ammunition, three cartridges of 9 mm ammunition and leather wallet containing Rs 125 were recovered from around the slain cadre, added the SSP's release.

Meanwhile, the identity of the deceased has been established as one Md Riyasad (22) s/o Abdul Hasim of Yairipok Changamdabi.

It is said that Md Riyasad was a trader.

He ran garment store at Yairipok Yambem Keithel.

He left for Thoubal at about 10 am yesterday to procure garments/clothes in a passenger carrier auto-rickshaw.

He took with him Rs 10,000 in cash and a mobile hand-set.

His twin brother is currently in Silchar for treatment of their mother.

Family members said that Yairipok police station was informed about Riyasad's failure to return home last night.

The corpse has been handed over to family members after post mortem at Lilong PHC today.
