Imphal, June 12 2009: With one more victim succumbing to injuries, the death toll in last night's attack on migrant labourers by unidentified armed persons inside the complex of Central Agriculture University (CAU) at Iroisemba has risen to four.

Of the six migrant labourers who were singled out and shot at by two armed persons inside CAU complex last night, three died at the spot while another two including one with serious injuries were admitted to RIMS.

39-year old Jaganath Mandal s/o Gopal succumbed to the injuries at around 10 am at JN Hospital where he was later referred to from RIMS.

Jaganath bore a bullet wound on his head.

The three victims who died at the spot have been identified as Gouranga Mandal (35), Suvam Maidher (18) and Dilip Mandal.

All of them hailed from Maherpur under 24 West Parganas of West Bengal.

In protest against the killing, students and staff of the University including the VC today staged a sit-in-protest at the campus today.

Participating in the protest demonstration, Dean of the University Prof Naorem Iboton said it is for the first time that such killings had taken place in the University and this has not only disturbed the academic atmosphere but also created fear psychosis among the students coming from outside Manipur.

He also appealed to all concerned to ensure such incidents are not repeated in future.

Meanwhile, along with post-mortem examination of the four bodies at RIMS, necessary arrangements have been made to send them back to their respective birthplaces.
