Imphal, September 20: Trainees/students, tutors and administrative personnel of Kangleipak Para-Medical and Nursing Institute, Khurai Sajor Leikai joined by local womenfolk staged sit-in-protest at the institute's entrance gate today in condemnation of the bomb attack by unidentified persons last night.

A hand-grenade reportedly landed and exploded at the Ladies' Hostel campus of the Institute 8.45 pm.

The protestors interacting with newspersons at the protest site confided that one Wanglen Khuman of the banned KCP organisation had made a telephone call to authorities of the Nursing School to cough up Rs 10 lakh within three days and that the attack is likely to be in connection with the extortion call.

Vehemently condemning the bomb attack at the institute, student bodies AMSU and DESAM in a media briefing described the act as despicable and unpardonable.

Opining that such an act is a manifestation of the attackers' mindset of disregarding sanctity of an educational institution and disrespectful to interest of the student community, AMSU's library and Documentation secretary L Sanjit and DESAM's Education secretary A Thoithoi said that a joint team made a spot visit of the blast site today.

Stating that information has been received of KCP's Wanglen Khuman slapping the Rs 10 lakh demand, they said 'involvement any group in yesterday's attack could not be confirmed as of now' while demanding that group/s concerned should clarify on why such an attack was carried out.

Reminding that no society can survive or advance without the education of its citizens, the AMSU-DESAM functionaries expressed strong resentment that the attack is akin to undermining the movement of shielding all educational institutions from disruptive programmes/activities.

While appealing to KCP Wanglen Khuman to revoke its monetary demand, they also emphasised that armed organisations need to exercise maximum restraint and understand sentiment and expectation of the general public.

They also appealed to the Institute's students and teaching staff to resume normal classes.
