Public meet decries killing

Imphal, July 19: A public meeting held at Bishnupur Bazar community hall today in protest against killing of Meinam Somen of Bishnupur Ward No.6 and Haorokcham Somendro of Bishnupur Ward No.8 by a combined force of Imphal West Police Commandos and personnel of 12 Maratha Light Infantry during an alleged encounter on July 15 has demanded suspension of the involved police commandos from their respective post and resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.

The public meeting convened jointly by the JAC formed in connection with the incident and the Apunba Lup was also attended by representatives of various prominent social organisations like CLK, MEEKHOL, AMKIL, Kanglamei, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Lup, Nupi Samaj, Kangleichal, CHETUWA, AMPAL, NIPCO, IPSA, AMUCO, UPF and Committee on Human Rights.

All those who spoke during the meeting strongly condemned the incident of killing people by security forces almost on a daily basis in the State and observed that the accused person should be given legal punishment only after proper trial.

Demanding dismissal of the police commandos involved in such senseless killings from service and resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh who has been remaining indifferent to all these killings, the meeting resolved that over and above the boycott of the Government offices and departments, the JAC would also boycott all the elected representatives.

Reiterating the public demand for repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, the meeting decided that Meira Paibis would step up their vigilant at night.

To ensure the success of the agitation being launched, the meeting also sought the support and co-operation of all the civil organisations.

The meeting also decided the family members and the JAC would not to take back the bodies of Somendro and Somen until the Government considers these demands.
