MP elect spells out agenda

Imphal, May 19: Spelling out his agenda, MP elect from the Outer Parliamentary Constituency, Mani Charenamei today made it clear that his first task would be ensure the territorial integrity of Manipur.

Speaking to newsmen at his residence at Nagaram, a jubilant Charenamei said that he would work towards protecting the integrity of Manipur and to foster communal amity and towards this end he would seek the advice and suggestions of all communities of Manipur.

On the peace talk between the NSCN (IM) and the Government of India, Mani expressed confidence that the peace talk will be able to solve the over 50 years Naga political problem.

Expressing hope that the a solution to the Naga issue will bring peace to the entire North Eastern region, Mani said it is only right for all to support the peace process between the NSCN (IM) and the Indian Government.

Mani further said that it would be in the fitness of things to study and chart out some course to initiate a dialogue between the different underground outfits operating in Manipur and New Delhi to solve the insurgency problem.

"As the representative of the people I will try my best to initiate such a dialogue," said the MP elect.

Brushing aside the charges levelled by the BJP that the NSCN (IM) canvassed for Mani during the election, the MP elect said that the allegations were baseless and without foundations.

To a question on which political front he would extend his support, Mani said it is too early to take a decision on the matter but made it clear that any support that he gives would be based on the interest of the State and its people.

He also rejected the Elders' Forum announcement that he would support the NDA if voted to Parliament.

To another question, Mani sad that his first priority would be to solve the insurgency problem afflicting the State for the last many years.
