Imphal, June 17 2009: A combined team of Thoubal district police commandos and 21 Assam Rifles gunned down a suspected underground cadre in an encounter that took place at Langmeidong Laimanai at around 2:05 am today.

The combined team rushed to the area on getting information regarding the movement of UG elements at area and laid ambush from 1:45 am onwards, said a press release issued by Thoubal SSP Clay Khongsai.

At about 2.05 am, the release said, the SF team observed 3/4 suspected UGs coming towards the ambush point from Kakching side.

As the security forces asked them to stop, the suspected UGs fired upon the combined team and an encounter ensued for about 6-7 minutes in which one suspected UG was killed while others managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

One 9mm pistol loaded with one live round in the chamber, one magazine loaded with two rounds of 9mm were recovered from the slain person, added the release.
