1 shot dead, another hurt in ongoing violence

Imphal, April 15 2009: A youth was shot dead while another sustained injuries in separate incidents of gun attack that took place yesterday.

According to police, one 29-year old Chanamthabam Jayenta s/o Dillipkumar of Pukhao Laipham under Lamlai Police Station of Imphal East District was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen holding AK Rifles in the courtyard of the house itself at around 7.30 pm yesterday.

Jayenta was hit by two bullets, one each near the left and right armpits.

Dillipkumar, father of the victim recounted that soon his son was shot , the family members chased the assailants.

But the armed assailants threatened them to turn back if they do not want to be shot down like his son.

Jayanta was earlier working as a driver of a school bus but later on took up quarrying activities at Iril river to add to the the income of the family.

He left behind his wife and a son.

Condemning the killing, Pukhao Laipham Chaokhat Khongthang Nupi Marup, in a statement, has demanded the killers to come out with an explanation through newspapers and urged to ensure such incident do not recur in the area.

The body has been handed over to the family members after post-mortem examination at RIMS morgue and Lamlai police have started investigating the incident after a case was registered.

On the other hand, a 22-year old youth who was collecting Lotus stems from his own farm but fled on seeing police commandos sustained injuries when the Commandos opened fire at around 7 am yesterday.

Along with some other persons, 22-year old Md Islamuddin s/o Md Buhramuddin of Heibong Makhong Mathak Leikai under Mayang Imphal Police Station was collecting Lotus stems from his own farm at Sampat located not far from his house, when one of the persons who has hearing problem ran away all of a sudden.

Islamuddin looked around to find out the reason and saw some police commandos coming toward them at a distance.

Fearing that he might be arrested, Islamuddin fled and the police commandos to open fire at him, according to his family members.

Islamuddin sustained bullet injuries on his right hand and he has been admitted to RIMS for treatment.
