Imphal, May 05: Strongly contending that there is no need for existence of Government if the civilians are issued guns to protect themselves and their properties, the Manipur Forward Youth Front (MAFYF) has demanded resignation of the Chief Minister on moral ground.

Addressing a press meet at its office this afternoon, MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal asserted that Governments are basically established to provide security to people.

As the democratically elected Government of Manipur has allegedly confessed its failure to protect lives of its citizens and their properties, there is no need for the Government to stay any longer, he asserted.

As such, Chief Minister O Ibobi should resign on moral ground, insisted Kangleipal.

He remarked that the Government's decision to issue arms to civilians asking them to protect themselves has negated the very purpose of an elected government.

Rather, it has heralded a highly anarchic rule in the State, he alleged.

He also reminded of a Supreme Court directive which prohibits arming civilians.

The act of providing arms to civilians by taking advantage of the emotions and sentiments of the people is a big blunder on the part of the incumbent Government, Kangleipal remarked.

In a similar fashion, if the people who have suffered various atrocities at the hands of security personnel demand weapons from UG groups to protect themselves and if their demands are granted by UG groups, then what could be the possible situation in Manipur, asked the MAFYF president.

Observing that it's time for all the insurgent groups to make a serious introspection into the demand of the people to issue them guns for self-defence, he called upon all insurgent groups to review their activities.

Further, he called upon the people differentiate between pseudo revolutionaries and the genuine revolutionaries fighting for sovereignty of Manipur .

A panel discussion programme on the possible outcomes of providing arms to civilians will be organised by MAFYF at Manipur Press Club on May 7, he added.
