Moirang protests crime against women

Imphal, February 20, 2010: Denouncing crime against women and children, a protest march was taken out in Moirang Bazar today.

Organised under the joint aegis of New Life Foundation, Manipur; United Community Development Platform and other NGOs, CBOs and POs of Bishnupur district, the protest march was flagged off from the ground of Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School and proceeded upto INA Memorial, Moirang where a public meeting was held.

During the march, the protestors carried placards and festoons inscribed with slogans 'Stop killing women', 'Stop trafficking children', 'Award befitting punishment to those involved in killing women', 'Respect the rights of women', etc.

In the public meeting held after the protest march, various resolutions pertaining to punishment of the killers of Chanbi, Meneka and RK Ratanmala as well as those involved in trafficking of women and children and rehabilitation of the trafficked victims, etc have been adopted.

The meeting was attended by principal (Retd) Tongbram Bijoy, Social Welfare Officer of Bishnupur district L Ibomcha and Chairperson of Moirang Municipal Council Bheigyabati as presidium members.

Secretary of Centre for Social Development U Nobokishore and secretary of Women Action for Development Subita Mangsatabam were among the resource persons who on the issue of crime against women and children.

Firing decried: In protest against the firing attack by armed cadres of a UG group over monetary demand of Rs 10 lakh at the Thambalkhong Laishram Leikai residence of Keisham Inaobi, who is an EE in MANIDCO, Meira Paibis of the locality staged a Wakat Meepham at Thambalkhong Ima Keithel today.

Participating in the protest demonstration, Konsam Ongbi Kamala, wife of EE Inaobi informed that after remaining under suspension from service for around one year, her husband has been reinstated and started attending office since October last year.

Although started attending office, no task have been entrusted to her husband.

But a KCP group served a demand note of Rs 10 lakh.

As the demand could not be met, armed persons came and opened some rounds of firing at the house on the night of February 18.The firing attack was also repeated on the following day, Kamala informed, while appealing to all concerned to restrain from attacking the house over such monetary demand which could not be met.
