Imphal, April 08 2009: Out of two youths shot at by unidentified gunmen at Khumbong Bazar in Imphal West District this afternoon, one succumbed.

According to police report, the incident occurred at around 4.30 pm at Khumbong Bazar, 5 kms to the west of Patsoi Police Station along Imphal-Jiri Road.

The deceased youth has been identified as one Yumnam Shanti (27) s/o Nande of Langol Ningthou Leikai and the injured as Heikrujam Tijendra (26) s/o Guneshore of Langol Housing Complex.

According to information culled from the site of the crime, one of the assailants was seen following the two youths while they were walking down from Khaidem towards Khumbong Bazar.

As the two youths approached an autorickshaw being stationed on the road side and boarded by a woman and the driver, the pursuing assailant took a gun from the woman and fired at the two unsuspected youths before being fled all three of them in the same autorickshaw.

Shanti was hit by a fatal bullet on his back while Tijendra who received bullet injuries on his right chest and left side of the belly has been admitted to Shija Hospital for treatment.

Police have deposited Shanti's corpse at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

According to the statement given by Tijendra , the assailant who followed them is one Momo of Chingmeirong who is known to Shanti and they have gone driving a Honda Activa scooter at the call of Momo.

However, there is no report of recovering any scooter from the site of the incident.
