Imphal, January 18: The United Committee Manipur has today urged the people to stay united in the face of the subversive attempts to divide the people and added that all should come together to identify the enemy.

In a statement, the Committee said that the emergency was declared on January 14 as UCM was aware that the peace talk between the NSCN (IM) and the Government of India would try to drive a wedge between the different communities residing in Manipur.

The Government of India has not respected the demands placed by the UCM pertaining to the peace talk and as such the Centre has lost the confidence of the people, added the statement.

The demands placed before the Government of India are, the progress of the peace talk should be highlighted to the people of Manipur from time to time, if any issues concerning Manipur crop up in the peace talk then the Government of Manipur and the public should be taken into confidence and Greater Autonomy for the whole State of Manipur.

UCM further said the burning down of the gate erected for Gaan-Ngai festival at Sawombung on January 16 was the handiwork of reactionaries.

On immediate receipt of the information, UCM leaders rushed to Sawombung yesterday wherein a meeting was held with the village chief of Sawombung Khunjao, Pantijai Kabui and representatives of the Sawombung Areas JAC.

The meeting strongly condemned the incident and it was agreed that it was the handiwork of some miscreants, said the statement adding that all agreed to come together and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
