Imphal, May 17: A jawan of the 1st Manipur Rifles has been taken into custody by irilbung police in connection with the may 14 firing incident at Keirao area that injured a student of Manipur University.

The MU student Thokchom Ranjit alias Angomcha suffered injury on the right thigh when a personnel of an MR team opened fire without any provocation.

In denunciation of the firing the JAC formed in connection with the incident as well as the Apunba Lup have geared up to launch an agitation that would demand scrapping of the repressive Armed Forces' Special Power Act 1958 .

The arrested MR jawan, who is attached to the Imphal East district police commando unit, has been identified as Khumukcham Oken (30) s/o (L) Ibotombi of Kumbi Terakhong.

Having registered an FIR case against Oken's conduct Irilbung police today produced the same individual before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal.

Cases have been registered under relevant law pertaining to the Arms Act.

The JAC, based in Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, from where the injured MSc (Chemistry) Second Year student hails today convened a public meeting in connection with the firing incident.

The meeting was also attended by activists of the Apunba Lup and MU student leaders.

Among others the meeting resolved to demand termination of service of those security personnel involved in incident and provision of arms to the public for self protection from arrogant security personnel.

Moreover, demands were raised for financial assistance to meet medical expenditure of Ranjit and a suitable Government job.

Apart from reiterating the sustained demand for complete repealing of AFSPA 1958, decision was also adopted at the meeting to launch intense agitation in case the demands are not honoured at the earliest.
