IED set off injures two

Imphal, May 14 2009: Two persons including a 14 year old girl sustained injuries when police set off an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) today.

The IED was discovered from a drain along the road leading from Lamphel Sanakeithel to residential quarters under Lamphel police station at about 10.30 am.

One Wanbe Naocha Koireng alias Nanao (18) who runs a CD parlour there came across the explosive when he cut down overgrown grasses.

Soon the discovery was informed to police and explosive experts confirmed that it was an IED.

The explosive was packed inside a lead storage battery case.

As there was certain technical problems to take the explosive to isolated place, explosive experts of Manipur Police set off the bomb there at the spot at about 2.30 pm.

To avoid any damage to adjoining houses, the spot was surrounded by bullet-proof steel sheets on two sides before the bomb was set off.

However, two persons who stayed about 150 metres away from the spot sustained injuries, believed to have been caused by stones blew up by the explosion.

The explosion also made a hole through a stone wall.

The injured victims have been identified as Naorem Singhajit (14) of Lilong Arapti and Thounaojam Amo of Thangmeiband Hijam Leikai.

Amo and Singhajit's father Rameshwar were engaged in a house construction there.

They were hit by flying stones in their legs causing minor injuries.

They were treated at RIMS.

On the other hand, a Chinese hand grenade placed at the residence of one Nongmaithem Chitaranjan, just behind the house of MU Executive Engineer Kharibam Shyamchandra at Thongju Boroi Makhong this morning was retrieved by police.

The EE himself and another person sustained injuries when unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade at his residence on April 30.It is suspected that the hand grenade found today might have been lobbed targeting the EE's residence.
