MPP meeting resolves to intensify fast stir

Imphal, June 11 2010: Manipur People's Party (MPP) today announced that the party will intensify its fast-unto-death stir even though the party president has been arrested by the police along with the vice president, former Assembly Speaker, Dr S Dhananjoy.

A meeting of constituency leaders and district leaders of MPP, presided over by the Party's Legislative Wing leader, MLA O Joy, today decided to harden the party's stand on the five day-old fast-unto-death stir.

Mention may be made that after the police arrested MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and vice president, former Speaker Dr Sapam Dhananjoy yesterday, three young leaders of the party's Youth Front president Mutum Maniton, vice president Th Dilip and Chairman Minority Cell Md Aurangazeb continued the fast-unto-death stir immediately yesterday.

It is also learnt that the president and the vice president are continuing their fast-unto-death stir in the security ward of JNIMS, Porompat where they were admitted after the court remanded them in police custody for 15 days.

Today's meeting attended by leaders from various constituencies and district units of the party at it's office at Statehood Square, Pologround, the party took a decision to intensify the stir till the Central and State Government take up appropriate steps to end the two month old economic blockade on the National Highways in the state.

Other leaders of the party are also prepared to join the fast unto death stir any moment the report added, a party source said adding that the meeting minutely discussed hardships faced by the common people due to prolonged economic blockade.

The meeting also endorsed the decision of the party to launch fast unto death stir by the party leaders against government apathy to the plight of the people of the state.

The meeting also condemned the arrest of its leaders by police who were on non-violent democratic protest in the larger interest of common people, the source said disclosing that the economic blockade imposing leaders who are acting against the law are not seriously pursued to arrest by the government till date.

Participants in the meeting also strongly charged the government for sending free hands to businessmen in fixing precise of essentials commodities.

They are charging exorbitant price from the common people taking undue advantage of economic blockade, they alleged.

The meeting also expressed dismay at the governor's inaction to the grim situation of the state.
