TIPS show jolts JNU faculty, students

Imphal, December 10: In connection with the International Day of Human Rights, Threatened Indigenous People's Society, (TIPS) and Manipur Students' Association, Delhi organised a photo exhibition at JNU, New Delhi today, highlighting the gross abuse of human rights by security personnel in the State under the theme, "Face of the rights denied people".

The inaugural function of the photo exhibition was graced by retired IPS office P Gangte as the chief guest, Professor and president of the JNU Teachers Association Kamal Mitra Chenoy as the guest of honour, Chief Editor of NE Sun Deepak Dewan as special guest while TIPS vice president Aslam Khan and MS AD president Seram Rojesh were the presidium members.

After the key note address was given by TIPS general secretary Umakanta, the presidium and the guests presented a number of resolutions for the people to pursue.

In a statement, TIPS said that the photo exhibition which highlighted the gross excesses of the security personnel under the immunity granted by the AFSPA left the students and teachers of JNU shell shocked.

A number of students, especially girls could be seen weeping silently and in some cases volunteers had to help them physically to aid them retain their composure.

Many wrote in the comment books to spread the atrocities of the security personnel to all the nooks and corners of the country, to cut down defence expenditure arid instead increase the funds of the North East funds of the North East, the security personnel have spat on the face of the civil population, etc etc.

Not less than 10 visitors wrote in the comment book that they were unable to jot down their thoughts properly as the pictures had shocked them immensely.

Many more also pledged to extend their support to the agitation against AFSPA.

One Professor of JNU told two media persons, who had come to cover the event, that AFSPA should be uprooted and confined to the dust bin, said the statement.

Preparations have also been finalised to show the exhibition at Delhi University, said TIPS further.

At the inaugural function, Professor Shenoy said that human rights violation is condemned through out the world.

It is a shame that security personnel have raping and killing civilians under the AFSPA, he added.
