Imphal, June 09 2009: One suspected UG cadre has been slain in a reported encounter with a combined team of security forces on the road connecting Pallel to Unapal under Kakching police station last night.

According to a press release issued by Additional SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam for Thoubal SSP Clay Khongsai, a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 20 AR, acting on a specific tip off about presence of UG cadres, conducted search operations in the surrounding areas of Pallel and Unapal.

Not long after the search operation was launched at about 9.40 pm, two youths were seen moving in a suspicious manner.

On being challenged to halt, they turned around and fired upon the security personnel who also retaliated immediately resulting in a shoot-out for about 10 minutes.

While one UG suspect was killed in the shoot-out, the other managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness and the thick jungles.

One 9 mm pistol with a bullet in the chamber, a magazine containing six live rounds, six empty cartridges of 9 mm ammunition and five empty cartridges of AK ammunition from near the spot where the individual was found killed, Jogeshchandra said.

The corpse has been deposited at RIMS mortuary.
