Heirok protest life attempt on ex-MUSU president

Imphal, December 05 2009: Decrying the incident of firing attack on former president of Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) Khundongbam Ashok Kumar, public as well as school students and teachers took out a protest march at Heirok area today.

A resident of Heirok Part-II Thokchom Leikai, Ashok Kumar (34) is currently serving as a lecturer in Political Science at Heirok Higher Secondary School.

In an attempt on his life, unidentified armed person opened fire through the ventilator of the window while he was sleeping in the intervening night of November 27 and 28 .

Fortunately, he escaped unhurt.

Commencing from Heirok Higher Secondary School, the protest march after covering many places in and around Heirok village concluded at the Kangjeibung of Heirok Part-II where a public meeting was also organised.

During the meeting, various resolutions have been adopted.

In the first resolution, the meeting demanded the Government to book and punish the attackers.

In the second resolution, the meeting decided to carry on sustained agitation until resolution of the matter and urged the Government to provide security to Ashok Kumar.

Along with formation of a JAC, the third resolution entrusted the JAC to take up the matter with the Chief Minister.

It has also been decided to stage a wakat meepham on November 29 in protest against the incident.

Becoming a student activist since high school days, Ashok Kumar was also one of the chief functionaries of DESAM as well as MUSU.

''During my tenureship in MUSU and DESAM, some incidents have taken place.

But of these have already been settled amicably.

Now I do have any connection with these organisations or incident nor there is any personal enmity with anyone', Ashok Kumar said while addressing the public meeting.

Demanding an explanation from all concerned in connection with the firing attack on him, Ashok Kumar also wanted to know what was his mistakes.

Throughout the protest march today, SPOs of Heirok provided the security coverage.
