Suspected UG shot dead

Imphal, July 05: A combined force of Imphal West District Police Commandos and personnel of 12 Maratha Light Infantry gunned down a suspected underground activist in a shoot out at Changangei area at around 9.50 am yesterday.

The slain UG suspect has been identified as Langpoklakpam Angouba alias Bimol (35) son of Langpoklakpam Birachandra of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai.

According to police, on receipt of information about movement of armed UGs in Changangei area, the combined force rushed.

At Changangei Ucheckon Leikha area, the combined force came across three armed UGs and the shoot out ensued.

One of the UG suspects was killed on the spot in the ensuing shoot out while two others managed to escape, the police claimed.

Contradicting the police claim, the family members, however, asserted that .Angouba alias Bimol was an innocent person who had no connection whatsoever with any underground organisations.

The family members claimed that Angouba was picked up by some police commandos who came in a white Maruti Gypsy (MN-9150) from near the road crossing of Haobam Marak Irom Leikai -which is situ�ated around 200 feet from the house at around 8.30 am yesterday.

After being taken away by the commandos inspite of verifying him as an innocent person by the local people, the news of his death was received at around 10.30 am and it was confirmed after paying a visit to the morgue.

Infuriated over the killing, local people convened a meeting at Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai and a body called the JAC Against the Extra Judicial Killing of Langpoklakpam Angouba has been formed.

The meeting also demanded dismissal of the police commandos involved in killing of Angouba from service.

After the meeting, a protest march was taken out passing through Kwakeithel, Keishampat, Pisumthong where slogans were shouted at the residential gate of Education Minister L.Jayantakumar.Kwakeithel Ningthemcha Karong Road was also blocked in protest.

In continuation of the protest, another meeting was also convened by the JAC at Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai today.

presided over by Kongjengbam Shyamkishore Singh, the meeting was addressed by representatives of JAC, UPF, Poirei Eta Meira Paibi Lup, FREINDS, UCM, Kangleichal, All Manipur Tammi Chingmi, MAPI Council and AMUCO among others.

The meeting strongly condemned the conduct of the Police Commandos in killing an innocent person after being picked up from near his house and demanded dismissal of the Commandos involved from the service.

Demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 and stopping any act of State sponsored terrorism, the meeting also decided that the JAC would called a 48-hour State wide general strike from midnight today till midnight of July 8 in protest against the killing.
