Three UG suspects shot dead

Imphal, April 25: Three suspected underground activities have been killed by security forces during reported encounters which took place at different parts of the State today.

In the first incident, two persons suspected to be UNLF cadres were shot dead by personnel of 21 Assam Rifles near the buffalo farm at Keirak under Kakching Police Station at around 3.40 am today.

The slain persons have been identified as Elangbam Kanto (31) s/o late Apabi and Kabrabam Premjit alias Ebai (31) s/o late Komol.

Both were residents of Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai.

According to a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles, based on specific information about the movement of armed UG cadres, troops of 21 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector HQ IGAR (South) launched operation in the general area of Kharangpat and killed two suspected UNLF cadres at 3.45 am today.

Two Chinese made 9 mm pistols, 4 live rounds of 9 mm and two fired cases have been recovered.

The slain UGs and recovered items have been handed over to Kakching Police Station.

However, contradicting the claim of the Assam Rifles, the family members asserted that both of them were picked up from their respective houses by the AR personnel on Wednesday.

The bodies have been handed over to the family members after post-mortem at the Lilong Primary Health Centre.

On the other hand, Imphal West Police Commandos gunned down a suspected UG during a reported encounter which took place at Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai under Porompat PS at around 3.45 pm today.

According to police reports, the encounter took place when a team of Imphal West Police Commandos rushed in on receipt of specific information about the presence of UGs in the area.

One hand-grenade was recovered from the possession of the slain UG whose identity is yet to be established and the body deposited at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.
