Imphal, September 21: In connection with the killing of a person after being picked up by some unidentified persons on the pretext of transporting a sick man, agitated public blocked the Indo-Burma-Sugnu Road today in protest.

The victim who was found shot dead has been identified as Senjam Sunil (30) of Tejpur Awang Leikai under Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency falling within the jurisdiction of Waikhong Police Station.

It is said Sunil was a former general secretary of Tejpur Lamjing Club.

His body was found lying at Konuma Kolakhong in the morning today.

According to family members, Sunil was picked up from home at around 9.30 pm of September 19 by four persons who identified themselves as activists of the proscribed UNLF on the pretext of transporting a sick person in his Maruti car.

About 2 hours after they left together, a telephone call was received informing the family members that it was not UNLF but KCP (MC) activists who had picked up Sunil and that he would be set free unharmed.

On hearing the news of recovering his body, infuriated local people came out in large number and blocked the Indo-Burma-Sugnu Road in protest.

They also used banners inscribed with words demanding a clarification on the killing.

The body was picked up by the police and after post-mortem at Lilong Primary Health Centre handed over to family members.

A meeting of the JAC formed in protest against the killing was held in the evening today.

Among other resolutions adopted, the meeting demanded all concerned to come out with a clarification on the killing at the earliest possible and urged the Government to take up necessary action to arrest the killers as well as to provide assistance to the bereaved family.

Setting September 23 as the deadline to meet these demands, the meeting further decided to call an indefinite bandh along Indo-Burma-Sugnu Road with effect from 5 pm of the following day in case the Government fails to do so.

A spokesperson of the JAC informed that preparations are being made to submit a memorandum highlighting these demands to the Chief Minister tomorrow.
