Imphal, April 17: In continuing crack down, Imphal East police commandos gunned down a suspected militant at Mongjam located about 5 kms north of Heingang police station today at about 2.45 pm.

According to police sources, 3/4 accomplices of the slain militant managed to escape and added that the slain person may belong to the KCP (MC).

One carbine, three live bullets of AK 47 rifle, three bullet cases of 9 mm pistol were recovered from the slain militant, said police.

The body has been retrieved by Heingang police and deposited at RIMS morgue.

The unidentified deceased appears to be around 27/28 years of age and is fair complexioned.

The deceased is short, with ears pierced and is attired in a grey coloured jacket and a red coloured Moreh chappal.

On the other hand local meira paibi members said that there was no shoot out at the area and added that about 2/3 minutes after the commandos arrived in two Gypsys, they heard the loud report of gun fire.

When the local meira paibis confronted the police commandos and told them that no one should be brought to their area to be killed, the police commandos opened blank firing and also used mock bombs to disperse the women folk, they alleged.

In another incident, unidentified gunmen opened fire towards a patrol party of 21 Assam Rifles personnel today morning near the Veterinary office at Chumnang Leikai under Kakching police station.

Following the attack, Assam Rifles troops accompanied by police conducted a search operation in the surrounding areas.

There is no report of any casualty in the attack.
