Imphal, December 01: Personnel of Imphal East police commandos shot dead a suspected militant at Heingang Awang Leikai (Leikha Khundo) situated about 3 kms north of Heingang police station today at about 2.30 pm.

One 9 mm pistol along with five live rounds, one misfired bullet and one Chinese made hand grenade were recovered from the slain youth by the police commandos.

The identity of the slain youth is yet to be established and he is frail and dark complexioned with the ears pierced.

The deceased was attired in a blue coloured cap, one sports shoes, a cargo trouser (olive green), white T shirt and a leather jacket (black coloured).

He received bullet wounds on the forehead, left hand, chest, stomach and left thigh.

According to the police commandos, they were first fired upon by the youth and his comrades.

The youth was killed in retaliatory firing, they claimed and added that three of his accomplices managed to escape.

The local people said that they saw the commandos coming in a vehicle and as the cops neared the turning point towards Khundo, they heard the loud report of gun fire.

Heingang police have retrieved the body and deposited it at RIMS morgue for post mortem and identification.

One AR jawan killed, another hurt : A jawan of the 9 Assam Rifles was reportedly killed while another sustained injuries during an encounter with suspected underground activists at Joukholuam village near Bihang under Shinghat Police Station in Churachandpur district at around 5.30 pm yesterday.

However, there is no report of handing over the body to the police till late evening today.
