Despite risks, non-local labourers want to stay here

Imphal, December 27 2009: Despite their life is in danger when armed miscreants continue to attack on them, majority of non-local migrants still want to stay in Manipur and earn their livelihood.

In the series of attacks on the life of the non-local migrant labourers in Manipur since late part of 2007 over 55 migrant labourers and pity businessmen had been killed by armed miscreants.

Seven non-local migrants were killed during 2007, 18 in 2008 while over 30 non-locals had been killed during the current year 2009 .

Around 25 migrant labourers are taking shelter at the relief camp opened by the authority of Imphal west district at Dharamasala Thangal Bazar, in the heart of the Imphal city.

Apart from giving shelter to the migrants labourers here, state government is also providing fooding free of cost.

Despite, the facilities provided to them, non-locals don't want to stay there only to return again when the attack on them re-started.

Despite, police appealed to stay and work only at the areas cover by the Imphal municipality, they will forget it and go to the areas outside the restricted areas.

As for instant, the killing of non-local bakery took place in the outskirt of Imphal municipality area even it was not so far away.

Mandalpal (36) son of Hairdas of Bihar residing at a rented house at Uripok, Imphal was shot dead by two armed miscreants while he was on his way to day's business.

Very few of non-locals taking asylum at the relief camp wanted to back to their native states.

Majority of them wanted to stay and work to earn their livelihood.

"We want to stay here and work.

We have no earning way in our native state.

We came here only to work and earn money as we could not find job to do at our home state," one of the non-local lodging at the relief camp said.

Another one said there is nothing different as they have to die of starvation when back to their native village.

"We want to stay here and work peacefully to get daily bread," he added.

Most of the non-locals taking shelter at the relief camp were from below poverty line and coming here with no other option in their home state.

Police has been indentifying checking and frisking of intrusion of gunmen in Imphal areas since the recent killing of two non-locals by the miscreants at their rented house at Chingmeirong Kabui village.
