Imphal, May 29 2009: The Senior Superintendent of Police of Imphal West district, L Kailun today stated that the office bearers and members of different students' organisations were arrested in connection with "their involvement in the killing" of Prof Islamuddin within Manipur University campus on May 25 and not as "leaders" or "members" of students' organisations.

In a press note, the SSP of Imphal West district stated that 'incriminating documents' and 'materials' have been recovered from their (the arrested students) possession.

"The recovered documents and materials also indicate the nexus between some UGs element and some student organisations in Manipur," the statement reads.

The police statement comes a day after the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) threatened to call 120 hours statewide general strike over the detention of students in connection with the killing of Prof Islamuddin.

At the same time, the district police also seek the cooperation of the general public in early completion of the investigation and not hamper by way of bandh, strikes, blockade etc which is detrimental to the maintenance of law and order, investifation of the case and also affect the normal lives of the general public, according to the statement.
