Imphal, June 29 2010: Naga candidates who braved the odds as well as the boycott call given by the UNC and got elected in the recently held election to the ADCs have made it clear that they are committed to work for the welfare of the people.

The UNC's boycott call of the ADC election was staunchly supported by the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur and despite the threats and even attacks launched on the houses of some Naga candidates in Senapati district and Ukhrul district, the Naga Councillors went ahead to contest the election.

The private residence of the Tribal Development Minister DD Thaisii was set on fire by the anti-ADC poll group in Senapati district.

With the threat perceptions still looming large, the Councillors are looking towards the Govt to provide them security.

Significantly, Chief Minister O Ibobi had earlier announced that full security will be provided to all those who face threats and intimidations.

"Instructions have already been given to the respective Deputy Commissioners to assess the damages caused to properties of the Naga candidates," said the Chief Minister.

At the moment, the elected Naga candidates from Senapati, Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Chandel are camping at Khuman Lampak sports complex under tight security.

Jacob Paomei, who won from 18 Ngari Khullen Constituency in Senapati as an independent candidate said that his house was burnt down ahead of the ADC election but he refused to give in.

"In order to safeguard our lives as well as the interest of the tribals and to ensure the smooth functioning of the Council, I contested" said Jacob, 45 .

Josiah Tangkhul who won uncontested from Ukhrul's Somdal Constituency, the birth place of Th Muivah, too said that he was committed to working for the welfare of the people.

He however, hastened to add that he would explore all avenues to see how the present ADC Act can be amended to make it more effective and enjoy more autonomy.

Naokahao Tangkhul, (61) another candidate who was declared uncontested from Ukhrul said that the boycott call, came after he had filed his nomination papers.
