Heingang residents rise against 'fake encounter'

Imphal, January 21 2009: PEOPLE ROSE up in two places in Manipur and protested against security forces killing people in alleged "fake encounter" Wednesday.

Killing of a man by the Manipur police commandos allegedly by bringing there anguished residents of the locality in Imphal east district and stormed the local police station decrying the act of the security forces turning open place nearby the village into killing field.

In another incident also villagers of Wangoo Lamkhai in Thoubal district confronted with the police when they (police) attempted to dispersed villagers protesting against killing of a villager in alleged "fake encounter" on January 19 last.

Earlier today at around 9.30 am, a team of police commandos gunned down a suspected militant at Heingangching under Heingang police station of Imphal east in what they said killed in encounter claiming and claimed recovery of a 9 mm pistol with some live rounds.

Police said, the suspect was killed after a hot chase while he was trying to escape from them when intercepted at Kairang, an adjoining locality to Heingang where the suspect was gunned down.

Claiming that the man was brought there by the security force and shoot to dead there and strongly denouncing the act, residents of the area converged a the local police station by shouting slogans not to covert the area a fake encounter centre.

With hard to face with the storming people, additional police force have rushed to the spot, official reports said.
