Boy wounded in bomb blast

Imphal, March 26 2010: A 14-year old boy suffered bomb splinter wounds when un-identified persons triggered a blast near a petrol pump at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai area this evening.

A police source said the bomb, likely to be a hand-grenade, was blasted near the NRL energy Station at around 5.40 pm today.

The injured teenager identified as Thongram Jacojit (Jacob) s/o Indrajit of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai was carrying fire-woods for domestic use when the blast took place.

With injuries on the cheek and left thigh, Jacob has been admitted to RIMS Hospital, where doctors ruled him out of danger.

Recounting the incident, Jacob's mother namely Ibetombi, who runs a roadside tea stall said the explosion took place close to another hotel run by an individual called Ashok, from Silchar.

Ashok's hotel had been shut for the last many months.

other eyewitnesses claimed to have seen a convoy of security forces passing through the area moments before the blast.

Many customers were also present at the fuel outlet when the blast occurred.

Meanwhile, a hand-grenade retrieved by police bomb squad personnel from a Keishampat Thiyam Leikai residence last night has been safely exploded today.

The explosive device of Indian-origin was recovered from near the residential gate of Kangabam Sulendro (50) of the said locality last night.

The grenade was blasted at a safe spot in Lamphel area at around 7.20 am today.
