Governor, many others condemn assassination

Imphal, May 25 2009: The Governor of Manipur, Gurbachan Jagat expressed deep shock and anguish at the heinous murder of Md.Islamuddin, Professor of Economic, MU inside the MU campus while condemning the cowardly and inhuman act by criminal elements who seem to be trading in human misery.

Expressing grave concern that the incident could take place in broad daylight inside the apex educational institution of the state-MU, Governor Gurbachan Jagat stated that the law enforcing agencies should exercise utmost vigilance to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Governor also conveyed hearfelt condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family while also appealing all sections of the people to come together in sharing the grief of the family.

Condemning the killing of Prof Islamuddin, the Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) in an emergency condolence meeting today observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to their departed colleague's soul.

The MUTA, in its meeting acknowledges Prof Islamuddin as 'a dedicated teacher and academician whose concern for the University and students was exemplary'.

"His dedication and commitment to the University and students was amply demonstrated by his acceptance of the crucial, but academically non-rewarding responsibilities of the Dean of Students' Welfare as well as the position of Proctor of MU," the president of MUTA, Dr M Ranjit Singh stated in a statement.

The shooting to death of Prof Islamuddin cannot be but the handiwork of people who have no concern for the academic and intellectual growth in Manipur, the statement further stated while also sharing the grief and sorrow of the bereaved family.

MP-elect Dr T Meinya has also strongly condemned the assassination of Prof Md Islamuddin and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the aggrieved family. Various other organisations and individuals have also expressed condemnation over the killing of Prof Islamuddin.

The United Committee Manipur (UCM) said the killing of Prof Islamuddin is not only a great loss for the students' community but a great loss for all of us.

All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), the Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU), All India Students' Federation (AISF), Manipur State Council, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Th Babita wife of Shyamkumar, MLA of Andro AC on her husband's behalf, Development Organisation, Andro Kendra, Youth Voluntary Organisation, Changamdabi, and Minuthong Telipati Development Committee, have registered their condemnation while also sharing the grief of the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, strongly condemning the killing of Prof Islamuddin, the Manipur University Muslim Students' Union (MUMSU) stated that the responsibility of the killing should be bore by the Vice-Chancellor of MU, Prof C Amuba.

The MUMSU statement issued by its president, Md.Abdul Hashim also demanded the resignation of the VC from his post for failing to contain the problems arising in the University which, according to them, is the reason for the unwanted incident.

The statement also urged the Governor, Gurbachan Jagat, who is also the Chief Rector of the University and Chief Minister O Ibobi to intervene on the matter.
