Taro(Ukhrul), March 29: Even as the mortal remains of the three Heirok victims, including two girls, were consigned to the flames today, the 'still enraged' people of Heirok have adopted a number of resolutions during a public meeting which was held straight after the funeral.

In a statement, the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Th Promila Devi, L Nirmala Devi, Th Romesh and Seriously Injured of (sic) W Rebika Devi said that about 2000 people of Heirok turned up for the funeral and after the last rites were performed a public meeting was convened wherein a number of resolutions were taken.

Among others, the meeting decided that if any individual is threatened and picked out or any threat is issued against the protest of the people, then the public of Heirok will rise as one and target any family in the locality which have links with underground outfits and take up action even to the extent of eliminating them.

The meeting also decided that meira paibis will keep vigil in and around Heirok through out the night and the members of the local clubs will extend their co-operation to the meira paibis.

If anyone is arrested in connection with the killing of the three persons, then no one should volunteer to bail them out or stand as guarantor.

In case this is violated then fitting action would be taken up against the erring individual, the meeting decreed.

Strongly reacting to the ultimatum reportedly served by PREPAK on the vehicle owners which were used to ferry the protestors to cough up a fine of Rs 20,000 each by mid-day today, the JAC said that this is nothing but sheer cowardice.

Vehicle owners have to be at the service of the people at any point of time, it said and added that PREPAK had threatened the vehicle owners that if the amount is not paid then their vehicle would be burnt while on service and the owners would be shot dead.

The bus owners had to comply with the wishes of the people as the JAC had decreed that any owner who does not extend their co-operate to the people in connection with the protest would be forced to suspend service for 15 days.

Whatever the case, the vehicle owners should not be made the scape goat, said JAC.

Drawing the attention of different organisations and the civil society, the JAC said that threats and intimidations are not the solution to anything and if the sentiments of the people are not respected then there is no guarantee that unwanted incidents will not occur, not only in Heirok, but in the whole State.

Drawing an analogy, the JAC said that bees can be reared to reap benefits for mankind, but the moment man disturbs its hives, then the bees will surely retaliate with disastrous consequences.

It would be in the fitness of things for PREPAK to either hand over the guilty cadres to the public or punish them fittingly with the knowledge of the people, instead of resorting to threats and intimidations.

This is the only solution, it added.
