Dorendra, Tomba elected leaders

Imphal, February 27: The former Chief Minister RK Dorendro Singh has been elected as leader of the BJP legislature party in a meeting of the party legislators.

The Federal Party of Manipur has also reportedly elected Leitanthem Tomba as the leader of the FPM legislature group.

The newly elected 13 members unanimously elected Tomba as their leader in a meeting which was held at the residence of party president Dr L Chandramani Singh.

Meanwhile the Samata Party has accused the BJP of trying to effect defection among the newly elected Samata Party members.

Two more candidates of Congress (I) RK Thekho of Mao and Z Mangaibou of Tamei have been elected increasing the strength of the party to 19 in the results tally of the 8th Manipur Assembly elections.

RK Thekho defeated his nearest rival, Soso Lorho of Federal Party of Manipur (FPM) by only 451 votes.

He won 13,387 votes while Lorho polled 12,936 votes.

Mangaibou defeated Athuan Abonmai of BJP in Tamei Assembly constituency by just 151 votes.

He secured 9893 votes as against Athuan's 8742.Meanwhile, repelling at 16 polling stations - two of Tipaimukh and 14 of Singhat was held peacefully today.

Soon after the repelling, some of the ballot boxes have been brought at the counting centre at Churachandpur.

The remaining ballot boxes will be air-lifted by helicopter tomorrow.

Counting of votes for the two constituencies which remains suspended due to the repelling will be resumed tomorrow morning and the results are likely to be declared by 10 am, a source from the counting centre said.

In another development the lone MNC legislator Soram Natum, who was elected from Sagolband constituency has applied for joining the Secular Progressive Front led by the Congress.

The letter signed by the MNC president W Nipamacha Singh was submitted to the presidium of the Front.
