Flood, Panchayat polls figure in SPF meeting

Imphal, August 21: A meeting of the Secular Progressive Front legislature wing was held today at the Chief Minister's conference hall with the CM in the chair to discuss the flood situation and its devastating impact.

The meeting also discussed the forthcoming August 30 Panchayat election.

Ministers and MLAs of the Congress, CPI, MSCP, MNC, DPP attended the meeting.

Disclosing this, a source said that the meeting discussed in detail the flood report submitted by the DCs concerned.

Departments which are yet to finalize their reports will also be instructed to submit their relevant repot by tomorrow morning, said the source.

After minute discussion on the flood situation and the damages and losses the flood has inflicted, today's meeting decided to entrust the responsibility of declaring the State a flood affected one to the State Cabinet.

The Cabinet is scheduled to meet tomorrow at 2 pm to discuss the matter.

The meeting also decided to highlight the matter forcefully to the Centre to avail Central aid.

Decision to ensure equal distribution of relief material to all the flood affected people was also taken during the meeting.

On the forthcoming Panchayat election, the meeting decided that the election shall proceed as scheduled and only in cases where the flood situation is acute will the election be deferred, the source further said.

Reports from the officials concerned have been sought in this connection.

The meeting also decided to shift inundated polling stations to other venues.

It was also decided to instruct the officials concerned not to leave their place of posting and help in the distribution of relief material.
