Five hurt in UG attack on poll convoy

Imphal, April 21: In unrelated incidents during the last twenty four hours, five security personnel were injured when sus- pected underground activists ambushed a combined security force while a Central Reserved Police Force (CRPF) jawan committed suicide by shooting himself with the service weapon.

The deceased CRPF jawan posted at the 134 Bn lamphel camp has been identified as Bhopali Singh from Uttar Pradesh.

Bhopali reportedly shot himself yesterday night at around 10.A bullet hit at the throat penetrated through the skull on the back.

Lamphel police has registered a case on the incident and the body handed over to CRPF authority after completion of post mortem at RIMS Morgue today.

The five security personnel were injured when suspected underground members ambushed a combined force convoy at Chalong Lamkhai about 30 kilometre south-west of Tengnoupal police station at around 12.45 pm today.

The injured includes three Assam rifles and two 2nd IRB personnel.

They were returning with polling materials from Joupi towards Chandel district headquarters after yesterday's election for the Outer Manipur Parliamentary constituency.

All the injured personnel have been airlifted by army helicopter from the incident site to the Leimakhong Military Hospital, said sources.

The two IRB men are rifleman Heramani (No 040) and rifleman Premchand (No 178) while the three AR personnel belonging to the First Battalion were attached to the 33 Bn Tengnoupal post.

Condition of Heramani is stated to be serious.

Meanwhile, the person who was killed when underground activists opened fire at a security convoy carrying polling materials from Kasom Khullen yesterday evening has been identified as a civilian driver of the jeep (MNS/1666) carrying security personnel.

The deceased person has been identified as Muhammad Tomba of Kshetri Bengoon Awang leikai under Mayang Imphal police station.

The attack occurred at around 6.30 pm when the security force convoy was returning with the polling materials from Ukhrul district.

One jamadar of the 6 Bn Manipur Rifles identified as Romio and a naik Angam were also injured in the attack.

The attackers reportedly took away one rifle with magazine containing 20 rounds and a Wireless set.

Romio sustained multiple bullet injuries at the shoulder and thigh while Angam was hit by a bullet at the shoulder, further said the source.
